Canadian respiratory virus surveillance reports - 2026

In week 11 (week ending March 21, 2026) In Canada, indicators of activity were decreasing for COVID-19 and RSV, and were either stable or decreasing for influenza. Please note: The next full update to this report will be on Tuesday April 7, 2026, with data up to and including March 28, 2026 (surveillance week 12).

  • Laboratory-confirmed detections
  • The percentage of tests positive for influenza remained stable at 5.7% in week 11. Influenza B activity continued to gradually increase while influenza A gradually decreased; influenza B detections have surpassed influenza A detections as the two viruses co-circulate at low levels. However, trends vary by region.
  • The percentage of tests positive for RSV and the percentage of tests positive for COVID-19 decreased in the most recent reporting week.
  • Among other respiratory viruses, percent positivity is currently highest for human coronaviruses (HCoV). Percent positivity of other respiratory viruses is following historically observed trends.
  • Syndromic
  • The percentage of volunteer FluWatchers reporting cough and fever was stable at 1.5% in week 11.
  • Outbreaks
  • The number of weekly respiratory viral outbreaks decreased.

In week 10 (week ending March 14, 2026) In Canada, indicators of activity were either stable or decreasing for influenza, COVID-19, and RSV.

  • Laboratory-confirmed detections
  • The percentage of tests positive for influenza remained stable at 5.6% in week 10. Influenza B activity continued to gradually increase while influenza A gradually decreased; influenza B detections have surpassed influenza A detections as the two viruses co-circulate at low levels. However, trends vary by region.
  • The percentage of tests positive for RSV decreased and the percentage of tests positive for COVID-19 was stable in the most recent reporting week.
  • Among other respiratory viruses, percent positivity is currently highest for human coronaviruses (HCoV). HCoV percent positivity decreased in the most recent reporting week.

In week 9 (week ending March 7, 2026) In Canada, indicators of activity were either stable or decreasing for influenza and RSV. All indicators of COVID-19 activity were decreasing.

In week 8 (week ending February 28, 2026) in Canada, indicators of activity were either stable or decreasing for influenza, COVID-19, and RSV.

  • The percentage of tests positive for influenza was stable at 5.5% in week 8. Influenza A and B are now co-dominating with influenza A activity gradually decreasing while influenza B gradually increases. However, trends vary by region. Among subtyped influenza A detections, influenza A(H3N2) is predominant.
  • The percentage of tests positive for COVID-19 decreased and the percentage of tests positive for RSV was stable in the most recent reporting week.
  • Among other respiratory viruses, percent positivity is currently highest for human coronaviruses (HCoV). HCoV percent positivity increased slightly in the most recent reporting week, reaching its highest level since the 2021-2022 season.
  • Syndromic
  • The percentage of volunteer FluWatchers reporting cough and fever decreased to 1.3% in week 8.
  • Outbreaks
  • The number of weekly respiratory viral outbreaks decreased.
  • The majority of outbreaks were associated with COVID-19 (66%).

In week 7 (week ending February 21, 2026) In Canada, indicators of influenza activity were decreasing, while indicators of COVID-19 activity and RSV activity were stable.

  • The percentage of tests positive for influenza decreased to 5.5% in week 7. Influenza A detections remain predominant, but are decreasing. Influenza B detections were stable in week 7, following a period of increase; however, trends vary by region. Among subtyped influenza A detections, influenza A(H3N2) is predominant.
  • The percentage of tests positive for COVID-19 and the percentage of tests positive for RSV were stable in the most recent reporting week.
  • Among other respiratory viruses, percent positivity is currently highest for human coronaviruses (HCoV), which has reached its highest level since the 2021-2022 season.

  • The percentage of volunteer FluWatchers reporting cough and fever was stable at 1.5% in week 7.

In week 6 (week ending February 14, 2026) In Canada, indicators of activity were generally stable for each of influenza, COVID-19, and RSV.

  • The percentage of tests positive for influenza was stable at 6.1% in week 6. Influenza A detections remain predominant, but are decreasing while detections of influenza B increase; trends vary by region. Among subtyped influenza A detections, influenza A(H3N2) is predominant.
  • The percentage of tests positive for COVID-19 and the percentage of tests positive for RSV were stable in the most recent reporting week.
  • Among other respiratory viruses, percent positivity is currently highest for human coronaviruses (HCoV). Percent positivity of other respiratory viruses is following historically observed trends.

  • The percentage of volunteer FluWatchers reporting cough and fever increased to 1.5% in week 6 (1.2% in week 5).

  • The number of weekly respiratory viral outbreaks continues to decrease.
  • The majority of outbreaks were associated with COVID-19 (61%).

  • The rate of respiratory viral hospitalizations reported by participating provinces and territories has stabilized.
  • Pediatric respiratory viral hospitalizations reported by SPRINT-KIDS have been stable in recent weeks. The majority of hospitalizations are associated with RSV.
     

In week 5 (week ending February 7, 2026). In Canada, all indicators of influenza activity continued to decrease. Indicators of RSV activity were stable and indicators of COVID-19 activity were decreasing or stable. Between November and January of the 2025/26 season, the Canadian Sentinel Practitioner Surveillance Network estimates that the risk of medically-attended influenza A(H3N2) illness was reduced by 40% among vaccinated relative to unvaccinated individuals.

  • The percentage of tests positive for influenza continued to decrease, reaching 6.4% in week 5, from 7.6% in week 4. Laboratory detections are predominantly influenza A and among subtyped influenza A detections, influenza A(H3N2) is predominant.
  • The percentage of tests positive for COVID-19 and the percentage of tests positive for RSV were stable in the most recent reporting week.
  • Among other respiratory viruses, percent positivity is currently highest for enterovirus/rhinovirus. Percent positivity of other respiratory viruses is following historically observed trends.

In week 4 (week ending January 31, 2026) In Canada, all indicators of influenza activity continued to decrease. Indicators of RSV activity were either increasing or stable and indicators of COVID-19 activity were decreasing or stable.   • The percentage of tests positive for COVID-19 was stable, while the percentage positive for RSV increased in the most recent reporting week.

  • The percentage of tests positive for COVID-19 was stable, while the percentage positive for RSV increased in the most recent reporting week.

  • The percentage of tests positive for both COVID-19 and RSV was stable in the most recent reporting week.

Canadian respiratory virus surveillance reports - 2025

In week 52 (week ending December 27, 2025), In Canada, influenza percent positivity reached 33.3%, the highest value recorded in the past three seasons. Detections in individuals ≤19 years have decreased in recent weeks. Laboratory detections are predominantly influenza A and among subtyped influenza A detections, influenza A(H3N2) is predominant.

  • The percentage of tests positive for COVID-19 increased in the most recent reporting week. The percentage of tests positive for RSV is increasing slowly but is below expected levels.
  • Among other respiratory viruses, percent positivity is currently highest for enterovirus/rhinovirus. Percent positivity of other respiratory viruses is following historically observed trends.
  • Syndromic
  • The percentage of volunteer FluWatchers reporting cough and fever reached 4.8%, the highest value recorded in the past 3 seasons. 
  • Outbreaks
  • The number of weekly respiratory viral outbreaks decreased.
  • The majority of outbreaks were associated with influenza (72%).
  • Severe outcomes
  • The rate of respiratory viral hospitalizations reported by participating provinces and territories has stabilized but decreased in the most recent week.
  • Pediatric respiratory viral hospitalizations reported by SPRINT-KIDS have been decreasing in recent weeks.

In week 51 (week ending December 20, 2025)

  • The percentage of tests positive for influenza increased to 32.4% (from 28% in week 50). The weekly increase was smaller compared to previous weeks. In the our syndromic surveillance indicator, FluWatchers, the percentage of participants reporting cough and fever increased to 4.8% (from 4.1% in week 50). This also reflected a smaller increase compared to previous weeks.
  • The percentage of tests positive for COVID-19 was stable.
  • The percentage of tests positive for RSV was stable.

In week 50 (week ending December 13, 2025) In Canada, indicators of influenza activity were high and increasing. Indicators of RSV activity were low but increasing slowly. Indicators of COVID-19 activity were stable.

  • Laboratory-confirmed detections
  • The percentage of tests positive for influenza continues to increase quickly and is similar to the highest value recorded in the past three seasons (27.6% the week ending February 15, 2025). Laboratory detections are predominantly influenza A and among subtyped influenza A detections, influenza A(H3N2) is predominant.
  • The percentage of tests positive for COVID-19 was stable in the most recent reporting week. The percentage of tests positive for RSV is increasing slowly but is below expected levels.
  • Among other respiratory viruses, percent positivity is currently highest for enterovirus/rhinovirus. Percent positivity of other respiratory viruses is following historically observed trends.

Indicators of COVID-19 activity are stable. Indicators of RSV activity remained stable at inter-seasonal levels.

In week 46 (week ending November 15, 2025) In Canada, indicators of influenza activity are increasing and the percentage of tests positive for influenza has crossed the seasonal threshold. Indicators of COVID-19 activity decreased and indicators of RSV activity remained stable at inter-seasonal levels.

  • At the national level, the percentage of tests positive for influenza is increasing and has crossed the seasonal threshold of 5%. The 2025-2026 Canadian influenza season has begun in week 46, pending confirmation that percent positivity remains above threshold next week.
  • The percentage of tests positive for COVID-19 decreased in the most recent reporting week. The percentage of tests positive for RSV remained stable at interseasonal levels.
  • Among other respiratory viruses, percent positivity is currently highest for enterovirus/rhinovirus. Percent positivity of other respiratory viruses is following historically observed trends.

In week 45 (week ending November 8, 2025) In Canada, indicators of COVID-19 activity decreased or remained stable. Indicators of influenza activity are increasing and approaching seasonal levels. Indicators of RSV activity remain at interseasonal levels.

  • The percentage of tests positive for COVID-19 remained stable in the most recent reporting week. The percentage of tests positive for influenza and RSV remained at interseasonal levels, although the percentage of tests positive for influenza is increasing.
  • Among other respiratory viruses, percent positivity is currently highest for enterovirus/rhinovirus but is decreasing. Percent positivity of other respiratory viruses is following historically observed trends.

  • 14 pediatric respiratory viral hospitalizations were reported by SPRINT-KIDS in week 45.

  • In week 45 (week ending November 08, 2025), among COVID-19, influenza and RSV, percent positivity is currently highest for COVID-19 (7.1% positive; 1,778 detections)

In week 44 (week ending November 1, 2025) In Canada, indicators of COVID-19 activity decreased or remained stable, while indicators of respiratory activity remained at interseasonal levels for influenza and RSV.
